The Samsung Galaxy A52 price in Kenya starts at Ksh 21,999. Samsung announced the Galaxy A52 smartphone which will succeed the Galaxy A51 on 2019, December 16. Unlike its predecessor, it will feature a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset and debut with Samsung’s new One UI 3.1 on top of Android 11. The A52 will also have a larger Li-Po 4500 mAh and an Adreno 618 GPU.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy A52’s design is no surprise if you are familiar with Samsung’s phones. It looks everything like the Galaxy A72 smartphone it was launched alongside in 2021, March 17. It’s made of Glass front (Gorilla Glass), plastic back, and aluminum frame. It even brings back some finishes from what we would want to consider its predecessor. There’s a new texture underneath this time around to sets it apart. And by the way, Galaxy A-Series brings IP67 dust/water resistance (up to 1m for 30 mins) on this smartphone. How cool is that?

Platform

Samsung’s latest One UI 3.1 over Android 11 has been included on Galaxy A52. Some of the new features include a dark mode for your menus and a new set of gestures for navigation. Here, you swipe from the sides to go back rather than swiping from the bottom like before. But the old options are still there if you want. You also have edge panels here, which can be pretty handy swiping on the edge of the screen will bring you to a customizable space for shortcuts. At the heart of the Galaxy A52, is Samsung’s new Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset.

Display

One thing that is no surprise here is the trademark Samsung infinity display is a 6.5 inch Super AMOLED with a 90Hz refresh rate and 1080 p resolution. And though it isn’t curved, it does have some really slim bezels. Instead of a notch for the selfie cam. There’s a punch hole. It’s not totally unobtrusive, but it’s all right. The viewing experience on this screen is great with plenty of sharpness and of course, contrast. Colors can be set accurately in the color settings. And brightness is respectable. You can get over 800 nits with a manual slider. There’s an always-on display, which will show you the time and notifications when the phone is asleep. And there’s a reliable under-display fingerprint reader to wake up the phone with.

Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy A52 quad cameras are probably as big a change from last year’s model. There’s a 64-megapixel quad main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, 5-megapixel macro shooter, and a 5MP depth sensor in daylight. The main cam takes decent pictures. There are good sharpness, wide dynamic range, low noise, and balanced colours. You can shoot in the full 64 megapixels too, but these don’t give you much benefit. The file size is much larger.

Now, Samsung Galaxy A52 has a 32-megapixel selfie camera. You would expect 8-megapixel photos. But for some reason, they come out in 12 megapixels instead. Perhaps through upscale. Selfies turn out good with nice colours. Why dynamic range and plenty of detail. The ultra-wide-angle camera is quite capable of a mid-ranger. Sharpness and dynamic range are both quite good making this a significant upgrade. Portraits taken with the main camera and that sensor are really good too.

Video recording

One feature you won’t find just anywhere is a 4K video recording from this selfie camera. But these videos look good with nice exposure. The Samsung Galaxy A52 can also record up to 4k at 30 FPS with its main camera and ultra-wide cam footage from the main camera, it looks decent. The colours are accurate and the dynamic range is wide. It does have a pretty good dynamic range too. Stabilisation is only available when we’re recording in 1080p. And stabilised footage from the ultra-wide is super smooth.

Battery and more

So then how’s the battery life. Well, the Galaxy A52 has an endurance rating of 93 hours. It does pack a heft Li-Po 4,500 mAh, a non-removable battery which is an improvement over the original Galaxy A51‘s Li-Po 4000 mAh capacity if you remember. Of course, fast battery charging is available on this one. And you should expect it to outdo A51’s 35% in half an hour. For audio, loudspeaker quality is decent. There’s a 3.5-millimeter audio jack on the Galaxy A52 for headphones. Actually, the quality here is great with Stereo speakers tuned by AKG and supports Dolby Atmos. There’s a lot of volume and not a lot of distortion.

The price of the Samsung Galaxy A51 in Kenya is around 13,499 Kenya Shillings. It is the A-Series Galaxy that was released in December of 2019 with an Infinity O Display. Its features include a 6.5 inches Super AMOLED Display, Android 10, One UI 2, 48 MP Quad Camera, a 32 MP selfie, 128GB of internal storage, and a long-lasting 4000 mAh battery.

Design 

This is what you will notice straight away – the design of this Galaxy A51. Yes, it does have that signature A-Series look only that this time there are a few twists here and there. First, see the back panel of this phone. It is made out of glastic (that it a mixture of glass and plastic) but what strikes you the most is the prism pattern it has. I think the Pink option expresses this pattern better. I think in blue you will also love it. A nice implementation here by Samsung at least to get away from the obvious. 

Another thing. Galaxy A51 comes with a quad-camera set up which I shall look into with interest later on in this review. In keeping with the design, we see a new L-shaped orientation of the same right at the top left corner. This is new and I am guessing in an attempt to test people’s reactions Samsung affected this here.

Come now Samsung is not afraid. Also, there is that LED flash on the back panel and all these are within the boundaries of a rectangular model in a vertical orientation. To be honest, since the cameras here are actually great I do not think you will mind this at all. But let us not get too ahead of ourselves here. 

There is yet another thing going on with the design of the Samsung Galaxy A51. Namely, the cutout. Yes, Samsung has now officially brought this high-end in-display notch to the midsection. A move many will surely appreciate. Only that (not a disclaimer) this time the cut our has been placed at the top center and it seems to me it has infringed the display estate just a little bit. Only slightly. The hole punch is fast becoming a thing smartphone makers are fast adopting. It would be nice if we all kept with the trends. Now just to wrap this up let me mention this phone has a 158.5 x 73.6 x 7.9 mm dimension and weighs about 172 grams. 

Galaxy A51 Performance 

After the design of this phone, you shall meet next with its various performance abilities. But I want to commend Samsung for having the latest software update installed in Samsung Galaxy A51. That is Android 10.0 and One UI 2. That is right against all internal odds Samsung Galaxy A51 runs Android 10.0. The same is also powered by an Exynos 9611 (10nm) chipset and an Octa-core (4×2.3 GHz Cortex-A73 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53) CPU. If you wish to get yourself a smartphone with enormous internal storage and decent memory then you can also take comfort in this one. For it has expandable internal storage of 128GB, with 6GB of RAM. 

Camera and Display

What then is the advantage of having such a brilliant display panel of such a complete (so far) smartphone? A Super AMOLED 1080 x 2400 pixels touchscreen with 405 PPI density and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection? Also, do not forget it has that nice touch of a cut out I mentioned earlier in this review under Design. Well, besides the obvious fact that this display will give allow you crisp content viewing, you will also get to see how immaculate all the camera lenses here work. How fine and how keen to detail they all are. By the way, under the display panel of the A51 is where the fingerprint scanner lies – cool. 

That L-shaped camera module on the back consists of a main 48 MP, f/2.0 wide shooting lens, a 12 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide shooting lens, a 5 MP f/2.4, wide dedicated macro camera, and another 5 MP lens with f/2.2 aperture and which is, in this case, a depth sensor. How can we even begin to explain how satisfying the images here are?

How can I? Keep in mind there is also a 32 MP f/2.2, 26mm wide shooting selfie camera within that hole punch. Yes, that is correct, 32 MP. I choose to let these numbers speak for themselves. Video recording however is just 1080p@30fps. I say however because 4K would be fitting here. By the way that dedicated macro camera allows you to get really really close to your subject. I think those who make use of this camera lens will surely appreciate it. 

Battery 

Finally, Samsung decided to grow up. Other years the cry was the batteries of Samsung phones but recently we have seen great improvement. Inside Samsung, Galaxy A51 is a non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery that is recharged with a fast battery charging 15W. Decent capacity to ensure long hours until another charge session is required.
